Celebrate Christmas With The BYO String Ensemble

The Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble will perform at St Luke’s Church (next to the Pepperpot on Queen’s Park Road), on Saturday 6th December, at 7.30pm.

The  award-winning String Ensemble, conducted by Andrew Sherwood, features the finest young violin, viola and cello players in the city. They will be playing the Bach Double Violin Concerto, The Swan for Cello and Keyboard, and Bruch’s Romanze for Viola, as well as some seasonal Christmas favourites.

The Ensemble won the Innovation Award at the Music For Youth National Festival in Birmingham earlier this year.

The BYO, established in 1949, is one of the finest youth orchestras in the country, and has performed in London, Paris, New York, Berlin, Barcelona and Montreux. They are a regular feature of the annual Brighton Festival. The ensemble has accompanied several top classical stars including Nicola Benedetti and Laura van der Heijden, both BBC Young Musician Of The Year winners.

“The BYO is an outstanding group of young musicians – you’re lucky to have them,” says Benedetti.

Sherwood has been conductor of the BYO since 1995. “I believe the work of our [BHCC] music service can touch the lives of young people throughout the city. The real secret is that these young people really want to be there, they want to play music. It is their will that really makes the music happen. This youth orchestra is life changing, and a real cause for celebration’.
