SANCTUARY FOR SWANS

As everyone has noted the drought has caused the pond’s water level to drop. While nature is pretty resilient sometimes action is needed to stop predators such as foxes taking advantage of the situation to attack the wildfowl. Our swans have been taken to the safety of a sanctuary and, while they have been ringed, there will not be an attempt to gather them up and bring them back once water levels rise again. Our park ranger, Lindsay Cattanach, advises that such a move would traumatise them, but adds that they may choose to return of their own free will in the future.

In the meantime, a planned pond maintenance session will take place on Saturday, 26th August with our community partners Coastway Vets. Part of the work will include anchoring baskets of Hornwort into the reed cages. The oxygenator plants have been purchased by the Friends of Queen’s Park with funds generated from last year’s Bark in the Park, which is sponsored by Coastway Vets.
